Rumours of a fire at the Burj Khalifa spread like, er wildfire, on Saturday night after low-hanging, dense fog around the tower was allegedly mistaken for fire. The ‘news’ quickly spread with many users posting pictures of what appeared to be smoke and a bright light on one side of the world’s tallest tower.
“Not only did people exaggerate the fire at Burj Khalifa, but they also announced an evacuation, & firemen trapped,” said one tweet summarising the chaos that was caused last night.
The Dubai Police responded to the rumours with their own tweet linking to an Arab media report denying the fire.
Firetrucks and ambulances also responded to calls suggesting there was a fire on the 100th floor, but by midnight the firefighters had left the scene. They also refuted the rumours, confirming to the The National newspaper that the scare was caused by low-hanging cloud.
